Description

Sodium benzoate (e211) is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, it appears as a white, odorless solid. It occurs naturally in blueberries, apricots and cinnamon and is used as a preservative for its antimicrobial fungicidal activity. It is active only at an acid pH between 3 and 5 and to obtain optimal preservation of the product it must be combined with one or more preservatives, such as potassium sorbate.

Conservante ammesso dalla certificazione biologica “icea”

The preservative solution is prepared with:

  • 80 g of distilled water
  • 10 g of potassium sorbate
  • 10 g of sodium benzoate

Dissolve the potassium sorbate and the sodium benzoate first in a little water (taken from the 80 g) once dissolved well, add the remaining water.

This preservative mixture is used in the measure of 2.5 g in a preparation of 100 g in total (therefore 97.5 g of cosmetic preparation and 2.5 g of preservative).

This is a basic preservative (it has a pH of 7.5) and therefore must be acidified to a pH of 5 to preserve it, with lactic acid or citric acid.

Preservative to be associated with potassium sorbate
